Beckie and Jennie (Ward 19)
Beckie and Jennie (members of staff from Ward 19) have won the June Values in Practice Award for their continued contribution to the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals.
Their nomination read as follows:
“Awareness of mental health issues is on the rise and we wanted to make our ward a safe environment for staff to talk about their life, their worries and create a ward where our healthy minds are a priority. Beckie and Jenny started talking with charities such as MIND, and Our Blue Light, to obtain resources, they have then set up 6 weekly Wellbeing clinics, where staff come in, have a cup of tea and a cake and talk about life in a comfortable way.
Hearing staff talk informally about their families, mental health experiences, how worried they get at work some times can be powerful. The response staff receive from each other is reassuring and creates a stronger team bond.
They have arranged craft themes, afternoon tea themes, they are designing pick me up jars to give out as we go in to the winter so staff get a little jar of goodness asking them to write down a positive thought day to remind them of the good times rather than the bad, especially when we go in to Winter. They have also invited MIND in to listen to the work they have done and obtain tool and techniques that we can use to promote staff well being
The girls have planned to run a programme of wellbeing clinics all year round. Becky and Jenny have understood Mental Health, how this can present at all levels of severity, they understand its impact on our service, on our team and on those we work with and how as leaders within the NHS we have a responsibility to maintain mental health in the same way we do physical health.”
